It is estimated that around 2000 tonnes of microplastics used in personal-care products are poured into the oceans every year.

This figure is primarily made up of ingredients used in rinse-off products for exfoliation purposes, the so-called microbeads; however, other microplastic-based materials used in leave-on applications contribute to a lesser extent.

Microplastics are, generally speaking, not biodegradable: once in the environment, they can accumulate in animals, including fish and shellfish, thus harming and even killing them, and with the added risk of ending up in our food chain.

Based on a thorough report on the topic completed by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA), the European Commission is amending the list of substances restricted under Annex XVII of REACH.

Adoption of voted and approved restrictions is due in 2022.

Nevertheless, the Cosmetic industry has been proactively moving towards the use of more natural and biodegradable ingredients that can replace standard microplastics such as Nylon-12, Polymethylmethacrylates, Polyurethanes, amongst others; CELUS-BI® FEEL is the winning solution to this problem.
